5:23 pm - SAT - Eagles
|
This morning I took the SAT at Grove City.
During the one whole, 25-minute section, I had the song "Life's Been Good (to Me)" by the Eagles in my head.
Then my dad (he insisted, on riding with me to GCHS & back even tho I got my license, because he hasn't put me on the insurance yet) said he heard the Eagles' song Hotel California was satanic.
Not so, says a page on Snopes.
It is an eerily dark song, though.
I recommend Life's Been Good to Me instead. =)

6:11 pm - ONE HUNDRED FIFTY IN THE WRONG LANE
|
I Have My License
Yes, it's been a long time coming. Doesn't matter. =)
I took my test with Mr. Parker from CP. He's nice. He seriously wouldn't flunk you unless you really, really couldn't drive at all. But I didn't have that problem ;-)
After my test, it was [REDACTED FEMALE STUDENT]'s turn to drive; 'twas her first day with Mr. Parker, and boy did that show! Your grandma drives ten times better. She started out with stuff like U-turns, including simple turns in the parking lot and then three-point turns in a narrow bit of CP's parking lot. She hit the curb literally 90% of the time. Then we took it to the roads. I thought I was going to die. These were just the back roads of CP. Nothing to worry about, right? 35 mph and no traffic. She managed to run off the right edge of the road probably five times. Not just over the white line, off the edge of the road. Into the weeds and rubble. Honestly I prayed more during her hour of driving than I have in the past week. Then she drove back to Greenville, about 20 mph slower than the speed limit (thank God!) until we hit Donation, where she sped and almost took out maybe five mailboxes. Seriously Mr. Parker told her, "All right, now you can drive closer to the middle of the road," every half-minute. That guy is amazing. He kept his calm the whole time, and she can't drive worth anything! But, I suppose I forgot he had that emergency brake (again, thank God).
Until next time, dear reader, God bless, and may you never be within half a mile of a [REDACTED] behind the wheel.
Yes, my entry's title is misleading. I did no such thing; neither did [REDACTED].

9:48 pm - I'm NOT an ACORN
|
[21:15] jenners15034: bye acorn! :) [21:15] *** "jenners15034" signed off at Thu May 26 21:15:12 2005.
Jenna! No!
I know she's kidding. But Acorn I can't take.
In a weird coincidence Jenna suggested that my name could be acorn. A week later Mom made a comment about me being an acorn, which I did not take kindly to (Mom! I'm at least a sapling by now!)
So Jenna has to rub it in...

Second, Sunday. It was surprisingly fun to bike with a lot of people from my church to Jamestown with my 2-year-old sister on the back of my bike. I also biked back (again with the kid). She sang me songs, haha! Then I watched Smallville and Superman on TV... TV is something I don't do often.

9:17 pm - Good Music on the Way
|
This mailing went out to us Switchfoot fans.Dear Alan,
Well friends, after months of recording, we've finally given birth to our newest album, "NOTHING IS SOUND." This album was recorded all over the world while on tour in places as far as Germany, Africa, and Australia, and also places as close as our backyard. We are in the final stages of mixing what we all feel to be our strongest record yet... which is scheduled to release... (dramatic pause) in early August. We feel like proud parents, and we can't wait to introduce you to our newest creation. I'm not sure if it's a boy or a girl, but it definitely has teeth.

4:36 pm - 404 cleared
|
So I brainstorm on that ugly 404 error and come up with a solution. Two minutes later, the tech support guy on the phone tells me what the problem was. (1&1 just changed the mod_rewrite Apache extension, which messed everything up.) I'd guessed the problem, whatever it was, could be sidestepped by using a different $_ENV variable, which was true and that's how I got the site to work again. But if those idiots had let me know that they had made this obviously significant change, I could have fixed it sooner or prevented it from happening at all!
so i'll give my best half-hearted yay

8:56 pm - My House
|
Every once in awhile I'll remark to whoever is near about an aspect of my house. This is not the house in which I live; rather, it's the house I'll have built sometime in the future.
Today I decided my house will have a bathroom like this one. Really. Click that link.
Amazingly I can't remember anything else I've said about my house at this moment. That is not good because all the gems I've come up with were pretty useful in my estimation. (Yes, unlike the bathroom...)

10:29 pm - MYRACE TRAINING WILL NOT BE AT GAP
|
Alan, Hello! Good to hear from you. Due to budget cuts, date conflicts with the Gap as well as new staff in my department ....yes, the rumor is true. The training this summer will not be taking place at the Gap (big time bummer!). It is our sincere desire to return to the Gap the following summer if $ and staff assignments permit. I'm in the process of writing the PLCB Grant for next year as we speak...it's due to Harrisburg this Friday. The area that PLCB is providing funding in (if I submit a successful application!) is evidence-based program training. I see MYRACE being a recipient of this training that will be provided by the University of Minnesota's Alcohol Epidemiology Program. You guys will be invited to my office for 1 and 1/2 days to receive this training. We are also looking to do a "Gap like" training locally (including fun!) IF money allows. I see no conflicts with you scheduling SATs in June. Training will not be taking place that month due to me being in Penn State and Montana for 2 weeks and facilitating our elementary Camp KIDS Program the remaining 2 weeks of that month. Hope to see you on the 5th @ our next meeting! Kelly
Chivalry requires me to note that I bolded text for emphasis.

7:43 pm - Quizzed
|
I'm always amazed when I take one of those spread-by-blogs online quizzes like the one at http://www.blogthings.com/truebirthmonth/ and it turns out true.
"Your true birth month is December."
Yeah! Wow! Maybe there's something to astrology!
But then I remember -- That might be in my LJ user info, and the quiz probably stole it out of there. Right? Wait... It never asked me for a livejounal username! So unless someone got really clever and used THE REFERRER URL /alanocity/friends/ to see my username was Alanocity.... then i'm impressed.
In fact, just to see what happens, I'll try answering incorrectly this time. Result: incorrect. Answering truthfully again gives me December.
The chances are one-in-twelve, so it's impressive, but not astounding.
I apologize for such a shallow post... See if it works for you! http://www.blogthings.com/truebirthmonth/

Dear Yahoo!: Does chocolate actually cause acne? Hershey Dear Hershey: This is a vicious lie, possibly spread by the fruit-and-vegetable industry and abetted by their allies in the vanilla lobby. The truth is, there is no evidence of any chocolate-in, pimples-out reaction. In fact, two separate studies have purportedly disproved the link. Thank God!

7:48 pm - Track meet today
|
I ran the 3200m again today - I bettered my this-year time by ~10 sec, but am still a minute slower than last year's 11:34. But you know what? It was a good run. Because so many people (it seems) cheer for me - that makes you feel good. And the fact I burnt some kid from GJR on the home stretch really added to the feeling, because I absolutely love kicking with a purpose.
Sigh.
Now I better start on that AP Chem packet :'-(

11:23 am - Track and a poor man's icebox
|
Track workout today was twenty minutes after I woke up – a bright-and-early 9:00 affair. In summary: 8 two hundreds; 4 ones; 2 tight, sore calves; 1 tired me.
Not as hard as cross country
On the way home I stopped at the crick/creek and sat on a rock so I could put my legs in the river. Wow, was it cold. I didn't stay very long (my foot started cramping from the cold!) but it made my legs stop hurting. I guess that's what they call being numb, eh? Fun times.
Right now I'm writing my letter to the bishop (for confirmation), and then finishing my article for the GHS Computer Club newsletter, then hopefully I'll get to wrangle with some PHP.

6:18 pm - Starfish Power: Regeneration
|
|
Interestingly, I just read that scientists are getting close to making human regeneration possible in this Wired story. Regeneration is the process by which animals like starfish and salamanders can regrow missing body parts. For us, that means that someday when you loose your left arm in a freak accident, you could grow it back!

Today I ran my first race since my operation to take out the tumor in my left tibia. It's amazing how out of shape I am in comparison to last year - My personal best (also the last 3200m I ran before today) was 11:34. Today's time? 13:08. Good news: I am running. Good news: I'll get better.

Found this on Snopes.com and couldn't stop laughing. I know, I really shouldn't, but I have a kindergarten humor. Haha!
How Long Must This Go On?
Two Arabs boarded a flight out of London. One took a window seat and the other sat next to him in the middle seat. Just before takeoff, an American sat down in the aisle seat.
After takeoff, the American kicked his shoes off, wiggled his toes and was settling in when the Arab in the window seat said, "I need to get up and get a coke."
Don't get up," said the American, "I'm in the aisle seat; I'll get it for you."
As soon as he left, one of the Arabs picked up the American's shoe and spat in it. When he returned with the coke, the other Arab said, "That looks good, I'd really like one, too." Again, the American obligingly went to fetch it. While he was gone the other Arab picked up his other shoe and spat in it.
When the American returned, they all sat back and enjoyed the flight.
As the plane was landing, the American slipped his feet into his shoes and knew immediately what had happened.
"Why does it have to be this way?" he asked. "How long must this go on? This fighting between our nations? This hatred? This animosity? This spitting in shoes and peeing in cokes?"

6:50 pm - IDIOTA
|
Doesn't someone in the Passion call someone else IDIOTA?
Anyway-- Evaluate. Person A: (corrects younger sister) Person B: Don't do that; she's jealous of the attention her new baby sister is getting Person A: Yeah, but that'll go on for a long time Person C: Not as long as you think Person A: There you go again, thinking you know what I'm thinking!! Person B: C, Apologize to A. Person C: No way, that's how he interpreted what I said. Person A (to C): You always think you know what I'm thinking better than I do!!! Person C: You just said that you thought it would take a long time for (younger sister) to calm down, and I'm saying it probably won't! Person A: There you go, saying "probably" now! Person B: Yeah, you should have said "Probably not as long as you think" Person C: He said he thought it'd take awhile! Person A (really mad): YOU ALWAYS THINK YOU KNOW WHAT I'M THINKING!!! Person C thinks: «when do I pretend to know exactly what he's thinking? A is really crazy. What I said wasn't offensive. Why should I ever have to apologize?» Person B thinks: «C is a jerk, why can't he apologize to A» Person A thinks: «I really hate C, he's so arrogant and thinks he knows me better than I do!!»
So who was right, and who was wrong?
current mood: angry

They have cute people, nice people, and computer nerd education. What else is there to want? Well, I guess we do have the premier track and field team in the area... :-)
Update: Mr. Myers is trying to get a C++ class together for next year, and is considering letting the < GHS computer club learn C++ and then enter a team or two into some of the programming competitions they have all around here!
